Chateau Clement Saint Jean 2013 is a classic example of a typical world-class Medoc red wine. It is available as a CASE OF 6 bottles on this page. If you would prefer to buy a single bottle, please CLICK HERE.
Located in the municipality of Bégadan, Château Clément Saint-Jean is managed and operated directly by the Uni-Médoc cooperative winery, which includes 300 winemakers and 1230 hectares.
It combines the most modern techniques and respect for the environment to produce a high-quality grape. And it’s not a fad, far from it. Indeed, from 1993, the decrease in chemical inputs to work the vines were in effect in the areas of the cooperative, with several certifications in reasoned control, agri-confidence or organic agriculture.
Two technicians from the winery are constantly crisscrossing the huge vineyard to follow the countless plots. Uni-Médoc winemakers also have the largest barrel cellar in the Médoc, with a range of 3,600 barrels.
Bernard Burtschy also selected two other Bourgeois Crus from the cooperative, the Châteaux de Bensse and Ricaudet.
Region: Medoc
Grape Type: Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot
ABV: 12.5%
Soil: The vines are grown with Guyot system on hills with favourable inclines and terrains that are prevalently calcareous-clayey and alternating with layers of whitish marl.
Weather conditions: The climate of the Médoc, like all Bordeaux regions’, is oceanic. Médoc’s, though, is more so than other regions. In fact, disturbances from the ocean such as excessive rain are the main problem for Bordeaux growers.
Winemaking / Ageing: All winemaking at Chateau Clement Saint Jean follows in line with traditional Medoc techniques. Medoc vineyards are low yielding but densely planted with vines. This creates a need for manual harvesting as machinery simply can’t fit between the vines. Oak ageing typically features on most wines from Medoc.
Tasting: Chateau Clement Saint Jean 2013 MUST BE DECANTED for at least 30 minutes (1 hour if time permits) to allow it to develop its intense aromas. With its classic blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has both generous blackberry fruits and a core of firm tannins. The new-wood ageing has added spice although it is judiciously used and doesn’t overwhelm, leaving plenty of space for the fruit. A highly rated wine by Wine Spectator and other reputable sources.
Food Pairing:
Strongly flavoured meats such as beef and game (deer or goose) are always going to pair well with this wine. Rich and savoury meals as opposed to sweeter styles of cooking. Harder, stronger flavoured cheeses are going to work.
For Chinese style food, this wine would probably overpower Cantonese style foods but would work well with richer Zheijiang style cuisine or the Sichuan and Hunan styled cuisine.
