Surani Primitivo di Manduria 2015 is a finely crafted example of how, even new wineries can create something special. When it’s built on a great history.
Four brothers, (with the family name of Pasqua) left the Puglia region in the 1920’s to start a winery in Verona. 80 years later, the next generation of the Pasqua family bought 80 hectares of land in DOC Manduria. Not only did they create a complete circle of wine making and Puglia heritage. They also brought the artisanal skills of Verona wine making back to Puglia.
This wine proved so successful in terms of the quality and price ratio, that the vast majority of wine distributors across the world, have fought over the rights to this wine. For the Chinese market, this wine has had a new label put on the front, and the prices cranked up to ridiculous numbers. It still sells strong at the new inflated prices. Lucky for you, we have some of the older label, at the older, great value price.
Region: Primitivo di Manduria DOC
Grape Type: 100% Primitivo
ABV: 14%
Soil: Iron rich and fertile soils sit on top of limestone.
Weather conditions: Puglian wine is the product of a diverse landscape. Half of Italy’s olive oil is produced in the dry heat of Puglia. The warm climate and fertile soil make it easy to grow almost anything. Puglia is surrounded by water on three sides allowing cool breezes off the Mediterranean to moderate vineyard temperatures
Wine making / Ageing: The harvest is done by hand and starts in the middle of September. The best grapes are selected so that only the healthiest and ripest bunches are sent to the drying rooms where they are laid out in single-layer crates.
The grapes are destemmed and crushed, then fermentation starts, at first at a temperature of 4°- 5°C, which then reaches 22°C in the final stages.
Malolactic fermentation takes place in steel tanks for 20 days. The wine then matures in barriques for six months and on the bottle for three months.
Tasting: This wine should be decanted. Surani Primitivo is an intense red colour. On the nose, blackcurrants and hers. A swirl of the glass opens up plums and spices. Tastes are quite full on and intense. Baked fruits, figs, but balances with robust tannins that stop it from being an overpowering wine.
Food Pairing: Surani Primitivo is probably the most versatile red wine we have ever brought to market. This wine goes with most meats. It’s strong enough to be paired with heavy meals, but also balances out with more delicate menus. Considering North East food, Shandong food, Zheijiang food and Korean Barbecue. For western food, pair with beef and lamb. It also works well to compliment meat pizzas.
