Settesoli Chardonnay
Settesoli Chardonnay is a white wine crafted in Sicily, Italy where the chardonnay grape takes on a unique character from the typical french classic white wine grape. During the past 40 years Settesoli has promoted and spread the winemaking culture throughout the entire region of Sicily, creating a real wine district and employing, directly or indirectly, over the 70% of the 5’000 families residing nearby. This scale of involvement in the local community is unique and holds even greater importance considering that Settesoli works in complete harmony with the environment.
Region and/or Appellation: Sicily DOC
Grape Type: 100% Chardonnay
ABV: 13%
Soil: Mineral-rich, dark soils with volcanic residues from Mount Etna
Weather conditions: Sicily’s Mediterranean location places it directly in the middle of the Mediterranean climate zone, which only covers two percent of the Earth’s surface and is also called the dry summer subtropical climate. The Mediterranean climate is characterised by moderate temperatures. 500-600mm average rain fall per year with more than half of this in the three months of October, November and December.
Wine Making / Ageing: The grapes for Settesoli Grillo are harvested and pressed to create the liquid for fermentation. The fermentation happens at temperatures between 18°C and 20°C to ensure consistency throughout. The wine is settled with cold stabilisation and filtration.
Tasting: Chardonnay is a relatively neutral grape and it takes almost all of its flavour and character from the terroir. In this example, the Settesoli Chardonnay, has a maturity and crisp mineral quality often only associated with aged french Burgundy chardonnay wines.
Food Pairing: A great wine to be taken on a warm evening without food. For Chinese food pairing, look towards Cantonese Cuisine, or most seafood dishes. For western styled food, this wine is the perfect balance to smoked salmon, medium to strong cheese, salads and chicken.
